The increasing population of Africa,
coupled with the decline in agricultural productivity,
has renewed calls for sustainable solutions to hunger
and poverty. These calls have resonated on the national
and continental levels, leading to initiatives like
NEPADs Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development
Programme (CAADP).
The Alliance for Agriculture Corporation™ (AFAC)
was incorporated as a non profit organization in 2005
with a mission to change the agriculture paradigm in Nigeria
by leveraging the academic, economic, political and technical
resources of the United States of America, particularly the
State of California where agriculture is an annual enterprise
of $27 Billion.
In “The End of Poverty”, renowned economist Jeffrey Sachs
identified food security as the “first rung of the development
ladder” in any nation. Our objective therefore is to forge the
necessary alliances with individuals and institutions that would
stimulate investments in agriculture with sustainable and synergistic
outcomes, while creating employment and attaining food security.
The bourgeoning global shift toward biofuels and alternative
sources of energy (from renewable sources like sugarcane,
jatropha, cassava and palm-oil) as a result of the pressure
on international crude oil prices from economies like China,
India and Russia has put an energy component in the motivation
to mechanize agriculture in Nigeria. And with the expertise
and investment capital in the developed world, we believe the
time for sustainable action with mutually beneficial outcomes
is now at hand.
